New Licensing Test for Selby Taxi Drivers
November 2009
Selby District Council has introduced an additional test for all taxi drivers new to the trade. The Driving Standards Assessment, to be introduced in December, will ensure drivers have the correct skills behind the wheel and knowledge of how to provide a helpful service for disabled passengers.
Although the test is a requirement for new applicants only, taxi drivers already holding a council licence may be required to sit the exam if directed to do so by officers on disciplinary grounds.
Speaking to the Selby Times, SDC licensing officer Tim Grogan said: “The assessment involves an obvious focus on driver skills, but also deals with passenger safety, with particular reference to wheelchair-bound members of the public.”
“Driving Hackney Carriages and Private Hire Vehicles has never previously required a test, which is something we now intend to address.”
