Taxi Drivers Slim Down for Charity
October 2009
Stepping on the scales and the gas, taxi drivers from South Tyneside’s Dial-A-Cab put the effort in to raise money for their local hospice, St Clare’s.
Nine drivers in total shed an amazing nine stone cutting out those fatty foods and making a great effort to get in shape. Taking part in a sponsored slim over 26 weeks, cabbies shed the stones with one driver, John Fagan, losing a massive 2st.
Speaking to The South Shields Gazette, John said: “I came down from 19st 9lbs to 17st 5lbs and I’ve reduced my cholesterol. I used to like kebabs and pizzas too much but with the help of my wife, Joanne, I cut out the fatty foods and started walking around Hebburn. Although I put some back on while I was on holiday, I'm determined to keep the weight down.”
Other drivers who cut out the treats and joined John in his efforts to loose weight included: Alan Anderson, George Tait, Ian Gibson, Trevor Burden, Doug Robinson, Joe Robe, Gary McCluskey and Brian Husband.
The South Tyneside taxi drivers raised £875 for the hospice after their slimming marathon. Sylvia Stoneham, St Clare’s Hospice fundraiser, told The South Shields Gazette: “I'm absolutely delighted with the amount they've raised. They've all done so well, both with their fundraising and weight loss. Dial-A-Cab is a corporate partner of St Clare's and the lads should be really proud of their achievement."
