Quality CrackdownHalf Marks in Worcester![]()
August 2010 Worcester City Council’s latest taxi inspections yielded a mixed bag of results, with 13 cab drivers failing to meet standards. Bald tyres and broken lights were among the faults found during taxi spot checks carried out in conjunction with West Mercia Police and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). Three taxi drivers were immediately issued with fixed penalty points and taken off the road while 10 other cabbies were also cautioned for the poor state of their vehicles and will now have to face the licensing committee. Councillor Marc Bayliss, who took part in the enforcement evening, said he got to see “the best and the worst of the taxi trade” and added it was “very worrying” to see some of the defects found. Defending the results, Councillor Simon Cronin commented that the outcome was not representative of the whole of Worcester’s taxi fleet – which consists of about 220 cabs – because the majority of those caught had been specifically targeted by officers. 28 taxis were checked in total with 13 found to be at fault. It seems it’s the age old case of a few unscrupulous cabbies giving the rest of the fleet a bad name. |
